DESCRIPTION
Striking and highly detailed, refined, unusual copper engraved George Vancouver's 1799 view sheet depicts various coastal profile views of the Hawaiian Islands and Galapagos. This sheet features six beautifully rendered views detailing, from top: Waikiki Bay, Ohau (Baie Whyteete); Waimea Bay, Ohau (Baie Whymea a Atooi); Lahaina, Maui (Code de la Rade de Raheina a Mowee); Bird Island, Ohau (Modoo Mannoo), Cocos Islands (off the shore of Costa Rica), and Isabella Island, Galapagos (Ile Albemarle). Vancouver and his officers drew these views while wintering on the Hawaiian Islands during the epic 1791-1794 explorations of the Pacific Northwest. These views represent some of Hawaii's earliest nautical shore profiles ever published.
This particular example of Vancouver's view sheet was issued as plate no. 12 in the highly desirable 1799 French edition of Vancouver's Atlas. The rare and coveted French edition is more beautifully produced, with better engraving, higher-quality paper, and more detail than the 1798 English edition.
