A striking and essential map for California collectors. One of the maps printed in the Supplement to Diderot's Encyclopedie (the 1770s) shows five views of California by map-makers from 1604 to 1767.  This map shows the progression and thinking of the map makers of Europe concerning California.  The progression from an insular California to one showing a more correct mainland California.
