The Dominions of Moscovy or Russia
DESCRIPTION
A richly detailed map of Moscovy, the western and central parts of modern Russia. Extends from Scandanavia to Tartary (China) and from the Caspian Sea to the polar region (The Icy Sea). The map depicts the historic regions of Moscovy, Siberia, and Tartary. Interestingly the Eastern Ocean (Western Pacific) is shown as "unknown" (an area highly explored later in the 18th century). There is a note just under the tit block that describes the double line, which represents the journey undertaken by the Danish explorer and diplomat Eberhard Isbrand Ides from Moscow to Peking (Beijing) in 1692 to negotiate trade relations between China and Russia.
