DESCRIPTION

A very nice and richly colored map of The Kingdom of Naples, covering all of Southern Italy, showing the provinces of the time. This is a beautiful example of Homann's cartographic style with incredible detail throughout the countryside and large graphic cartouches. Locates hundreds of villages and many cities, included fortified ones. The title cartouche features Perseus riding Pegasus to save Andromeda from the sea monster Cetus. The distance scale features a scene showing Mount Vesuvius erupting, putti, and the royal coat of arms of the Kingdom of Naples.

A nice impression on a bright sheet with full contemporary color in the map and later color in the cartouches. There is minor soiling, some printer's ink residue, a short centerfold separation at right, and a printer's crease at top center. Trimmed into the border at left by the bookbinder, and the left margin has been extended a bit with old paper to accommodate framing. Slight creasing in the upper right.
