DESCRIPTION
Often referred to as "Münster's Monsters", this is one of the most famous charts of mythical sea creatures by Sebastian Munster. Inspired and derived from the 'Carta Marina' of 1539 by Olaus Magnus. German text on verso.
It shows a large assortment of toothed, tusked and horned creatures feeding, attacking, and spouting. There are also some terrestrial creatures, albeit less mythical, shown on the distant shore along the top of the plate. This is a highly sought after plate.
This is an original, hand-colored woodcut published by Sebastian Munster in Basel around the year 1550. Date of coloring unknown.
