L'Amerique, Dressee pour l'etude de la Geographie

A unique and very rare edition of Louis Brion de la Tour's map of the Americas. This map shows the continents of South and North America with a greatly distorted and imaginative west coast of North America. The Strait of Juan de Fuca is shown, although in an unrecognizable configuration, and connected to a hopeful northwest navigable route across North America. There is a highly decorative border, title cartouche, and sixteen ships at sea in differing weather conditions (storm clouds surrounding the ships presumably indicate sea conditions encountered by some past sea captain). This edition is interesting and rare on the market due to its very large margins and the fact that the upper and lower borders have not been cropped or cropped tight to them (which is a common occurrence with this map typically, presumably to fit the dimensions of the atlas in which it was published). This map may be a separate issue but we have insufficient information to verify this. The Atlas General of 1766 is regarded as Louis Brion de la Tour's most notable work.
